The Use of Leeches in Veterinary Medicine
In the course of the sanguisuction process, the leech releases saliva into the wound. The saliva ingredients induce anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and blood circulation enhancing effects. These effects are used in the treatment of indications like arthritis, joint and tissue inflammations, or wound care. The patients mainly are hoofed animals like horses or pets like cats and dogs. Characteristic indications are chronic equine laminitis or equine podotrochlosis syndrome (horses), hip dysplasia or bite and scratch injuries (cats or dogs).
